Since I had my Free installation for new DirecTV customers I have been watching the A&E show Hoarders a lot. This show is really sad for a lot of reasons. I work in mental health and deal with mental issues everyday but nothing to the extent that this show does. The people on this show are in danger of losing everything but the mental illness prevents them from getting their lives together. Hoarders does a great job at exploring the condition of hoarding without making fun or taking advantage of the people that are a part of the show. The show explores! , usually 2 people of families that suffer from hoarding. Hoarding is a mental disorder that prevents people from getting rid of things. Sometimes the items are really specific like food, animals or clothes, sometimes it is more general and they cannot get rid of anything. The show brings in a therapist and organizer to help the featured hoarder try and get some order to their lives and homes. I really like that the show offers solutions rather than just explains the problems. I also really like the therapist they bring on. They have some of the most respected doctors in their field on the show trying to help people and discover the root of their hoarding. One of the most interesting shows so far was the cat hoarder. She could not turn away a stray cat and her home was condemned as unlivable do to all the cats and feces. The show is an excellent tool at describing a somewhat unknown menta! l illness.
