Michigan Chrysler Dealers Hear Chrysler Posts Net Loss for 2010, but 2011 Outlook Brighter

DETROIT, M.I. – Michigan Chrysler dealers learned that Chrysler Group LLC officially reported a net loss for the 2010 year. Chrysler was one of the major automakers that went bankrupt in 2009 and sought aid from the government to continue business. For this reason, Chrysler was expecting lower profits for the year. In the end, the projected numbers were higher than expected, but there was still a loss for the year.
“What Chrysler delivered last year, on both the product and financial fronts, surpassed many expectations,” Sergio Marchionne, Chrysler CEO, said in a statement issued by the company.
The first projections included a break-even for the year; but the final net loss for 2010 was 2 million while the operating profit was 3 million, which is a higher number than the adjusted figure of 0 million that Marchionne had projected.
Although Chrysler’s net revenue was .9 billion for 2010, Chrysler believes that what made it so difficult to hit its goal of .5 billion was the .3 billion that was charged in interest from the federal government for the 2009 bailout.
Michigan Chrysler dealers have been a part of the announcements as Chrysler unveiled 16 new/upgraded vehicles that were added to its lineup last year.
“All of these vehicles bear testimony to Chrysler’s rebirth. As Chrysler Group’s brand displays at the Detroit auto show confirmed, the company has lived up to its promise to launch 16 all-new or significantly refreshed vehicles in the past 12 months,” said Marchionne.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is taking the lead as Chrysler is aiming for an IPO sometime this year as its competitor General Motors did in 2010. Chrysler hopes the IPO will be as successful for its company as it was for General Motors.

Michigan Chrysler dealers were happy to see Chrysler’s market share grow from 8.8 percent to 9.2 percent. Chrysler is projecting a much better year for 2011 with expected net revenues of billion, which will exceed the original projections of .5.

DETROIT, M.I. – Michigan Jeep dealers are hoping to end the year on a good note, but they’ll have to find a way to make noise in order to be heard amid all the excitement generating from General Motors’ initial public offering scheduled for Thursday. Michigan GMC dealers may fare much better this week.
The Big Finish 2010 event held by Michigan Jeep dealers could also be applied to all three Detroit automakers, as all are doing everything they can to end 2010 on a good note, or make a big finish. Ford continues to go heavy on its newest products such as the Ford Fiesta and Ford Explorer. GM executives have been pushing hard during their road show to promote the upcoming IPO this Thursday, and the high interest in the IPO will likely set the final IPO price at per share; the IPO will not only generate a good chunk of change for GM but will also reduce the government’s claim in the company by almost 20 percent.
Many media outlets are devoting their energies to the GM IPO, so it will be a rarity for Michigan Jeep dealers to see much press on their Big Finish 2010 event, other than from Chrysler.
There is no doubt that year-end reports about the fall and rise of the Detroit Three will be plentiful as January 2011 approaches, but it’s definitely going to be hard for automakers to get any major press coverage for individual sales events like these.
MI Auto Times, however, once again proves to be the exceptional source delivering the most relevant automotive news to Michigan audiences and will always attempt to keep readers notified about all automaker news events, no matter how great or how small.

In July 17, new car and truck dealers from across the country discussed with Members of the House of Representatives their efforts to perform sound hike in the national Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standard. Dealers were urging their Representatives to support a bill, H.R. 2927 — the Hill-Terry CAFE alternative, which would increase fuel economy 30 to 40 percent over the next 15 years.
The talk highlighted that consumers will ultimately determine the success or failure of any efforts of the government to modify fuel economy standards.
NADA Chairman Dale Willey said that there is a very thin line between directing more fuel economy and meeting consumer needs. According to him, it does not mean that consumers will buy these vehicles just because Congress sets a ridiculous CAFE standard. He added that if the consumers cannot get the vehicle that meets their needs, they will keep the ones they have, and that would defeat the intention of increasing fuel economy.
As regards House action on fuel economy expected as soon as next week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and other lawmakers have stated publicly that they are supporting the more severe CAFE jump approved by the Senate in June, wherein a 35 mpg is minimum standard for combined car/truck. Automakers would be forced to dramatically trim down the sizes of their vehicles to those that carry less cargo, fewer people, and compromise safety. This would be the coarse just to meet the harsh Senate standard and other more radical proposals. These idealistic standards would greatly increase vehicle prices as new fuel saving technologies, such as hybrids or diesels, would add from ,000-,000 to the cost of a vehicle; or simply totally eliminate certain models.
Willey said that a harder push on an arbitrary CAFE standard and an arbitrary starting date would result to a bigger risk of manufacturing vehicles that conflict with consumer demand rather than complementing or attaching consumer demand.
The Hill-Terry CAFE alternative increases current standards by Model Year 2022 form 32 to 35 mpg. Not like the Senate package, the Hill-Terry bill allows separate attribute standards for different classes of vehicles, such as cars, trucks and SUVs. These separate attribute standards protect the heterogeneity in vehicles that American consumers demand.
