Running a Business that Runs Through Walls: Josh Millet, the founder and CEO of Criteria Corp. is a Leader in the Employee Testing

Running a business is not for the meek. According to a Wells Fargo/NFIB study, less than 40% of all new businesses become profitable. It is an exercise reserved for the brave and sometimes the borderline mad. These people look at the brick walls of business and accept that there is no easy way to get to the success on the other side. The entrepreneur knows that he is going to have to run as fast as he can into that brick wall. He is going to either burst through in triumph or live to see himself fall into a million pulpy pieces-a victim of one or a hundred missteps, one or a hundred miscalculations.

Josh Millet is not a man for the meek. He is the CEO and founder of Criteria Corp., an organization providing pre-employment and employee testing for businesses. Though today his business serves over 300 clients, he suffered a lot of bumps and bruises while trying to break through to where the sun shined brighter.

Growing up the son of an archaeologist in Canada, Josh was exposed to all aspects of academia. Though extremely bright and excelling in the classroom, he was discouraged by his parents from entering the world of business. “Business was a sort of bad word.” He went through most of his early 20s without giving a second thought to starting his own business. After completing undergraduate work at the University of Pennsylvania, he earned his doctorate in French Medieval History at Harvard University. “I wasn’t thinking about running a software company. I was thinking about Joan of Arc.”

Unfortunately, it wasn’t long after graduation that Josh learned a degree and good grades don’t always lead to where you want to be in life. After failing to find a job as a professor, he still wanted to follow his love of teaching. In college he had given free classes at a local YMCA to kids who wanted extra preparation for the SATs, and found a large need in the community for his services. He decided to start giving free educational courses in the community again, only this time he relied on the money of advertisers to keep afloat.

Sometimes the first brick wall you hit can be the hardest, and this was no exception. The first week Josh taught the class, only five people showed up. He smelled the smoke of failure and only hoped that he could save the kindling with which he was trying to start his career. Amazingly, a different kind of fire ignited within the community. Within weeks, his program needed four classrooms just to fit all of the kids. When he decided to put his classes online, the student body rose to over one million.

After an 18-month run in the education field, he turned his sights to employment testing. The late 90s. An exciting time when people where just starting to understand the full potential of the Internet. Josh knew he wanted in. If he could gather a following of over a million students in just one year after utilizing the Internet, he felt he could change the way businesses evaluated potential employees in much the same way. Getting investors to believe in his idea was excruciating. “We were in the most danger in the early days when trying to get off the ground.” It took over six months to interest enough blue-chip clients to get Criteria Corp. off the drawing board. “It can be discouraging at times when people don’t immediately grasp the concept or see the virtue in what you do.”

Though it took courage and countless hours of relentless work, Josh can now proudly stand on the other side of the wall, and he wants you to come with him if you have a passion to succeed in business. “I always encourage friends to start their own thing. I really don’t see why anyone wouldn’t. So warning people about the perils is really not my emphasis. I always err on the other side, which is saying that anyone can do it.”

Travel Made Easy: Anne Payne, the Founder and CEO of BeDynamic, Created a Software Company Based on her Love for Travel and Business

Edit Article |

Posted: Nov 09, 2009 |Comments: 0
|

Growing up in Seattle and graduating with a degree in business and a minor in Spanish, Anne Payne had always taken a strong interest in international business. Working her way through college at Nordstrom in the merchandising department, then moving on to become a business project manager, Payne was excited by the company’s apparel design and manufacturing business. “Nordstrom had designers in Seattle sourcing fabrics in Italy and thread in South America, and it’s all getting assembled in Asia. So you have this global entity, and I was absolutely fascinated by that.”

Though Payne enjoyed a solid career at Nordstrom, she also had an idea that she couldn’t shake. The aha moment came at 2 a.m. when she and a good friend (and ultimate BeDynamic cofounder) came up with the idea of compiling a database of things to do while travelling. From arts and entertainment to dining, customers would have all the information about what to do at their destination, all in real time. Being a passionate leisure traveler as well as frequent business traveller, the idea of a concierge-type database made perfect sense. “You fall in love with an idea and can’t stop thinking about it, and you get to a point where you have to pursue it,” Payne says. So with the support of her family, Payne and her cofounder cashed in profit-share money from Nordstrom and started BeDynamic in 2000.

After surveying about 100 different hotels on the West Coast, they found that concierges were naturally relying on the Internet for their information, but it was scattered throughout 500 bookmarks across their favourite Web sites. The problem was the lack of a centralized area to manage all of the information, which is how the concept of BeDynamic evolved.

The hopeful entrepreneurs then approached the W Hotel in Seattle, which agreed to license BeDynamic’s software. A few more hotels came on board and by August 2001, the company was flourishing until the September 11th tragedy brought everything to a halt. Hotels were cutting staff, especially in non-revenue generating areas like the concierge, which proved to be an obstacle for the young company. Instead of letting the attacks dampen Payne’s spirits, that singular catastrophe forced her to do things differently and work even harder. She and her team began to look at how to utilize data feeds and aggregate content directly from hundreds of city venues. This paid off, as Seattle’s Convention and Visitors Bureau became BeDynamic’s first online customer. In October 2001, the San Francisco CVB joined that list of customers as more bureaus began selling and promoting tourism. With hopes of getting people back on planes and into big cities following September 11, BeDynamic started to pick up again. The company answers the key question: What do you do once you get there? It aggregates all of the information (what they call Actionable Entertainment Content) regarding places to visit, eat or stay into one single database and feeds that content in real time to convention and visitor bureaus, airlines, hotels and other trusted brands in the travel industry. This has also led to the company’s becoming a targeted marketing firm, a natural outgrowth of their original mission.

While BeDynamic is still in its early stage and with several setbacks along the way, Payne maintains a positive attitude. She describes that being a CEO and company cofounder is a bit like playing baseball. “You’re not going to hit a home run every time. So it’s the ability to take a step back and say, ‘That didn’t work out; what are the ten things that did work out well this week?’ We try to balance out the mistakes with the successes.”

And despite “the thorn in my side” of raising capital (.5 million to date), Payne continues to be passionate and excited about what she does everyday. “I like the founder role. Jack of all trades, master of none,” she laughs. “Not like you’re walking in and you know exactly how your day is going to pan out.” The unpredictability of the business has taught Payne to become resourceful; among the most important lessons she has learned is that the light bill has to be paid from somewhere. “All the little things add up. It forces you to be really creative, to be a master at dumpster diving,” she admits with another laugh. “That’s actually kind of exciting.”

Interview with Social Media expert Gelie Akhenblit, Founder and CEO of NetworkingPhoenix

The importance of Social Media in today’s business world has never been more evident.  With a properly developed strategy, social media provides endless opportunities to build relationships, reinforce branding and messaging, and maximize your company’s online presence, reaching an unlimited number of targeted new contacts.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Gelie Akhenblit, Founder and CEO of NetworkingPhoenix.com, one of the Valley’s most dynamic networking and social media sites.  NetworkingPhoenix.com started out as a central clearinghouse for events held by existing networking groups in the Valley, and through the effectiveness of networking and the site’s social media capabilities, has grown into a hugely popular local online business resource that is changing the landscape of small business and entrepreneurship.

In addition to maintaining the NetworkingPhoenix.com site, Gelie shares her expertise through training professionals on “how to network strategically, create a personal following, and effectively and deliberately employ the latest social media tools.”  Here’s what she shared with me:

Q:  What got you started developing NetworkingPhoenix.com?

A: My second job out of college was in the corporate world and about 1.5 years into it I decided that this is not the path I want to pursue. I didn’t like the restraints and knew there was something else I could do.  I enjoyed networking and finding out what was going on in the marketplace.  While networking, I found out there was no set place to find information about all the networking groups in the Valley, so I started thinking about developing a calendar to bring everything together and to connect people.  That’s how NetworkingPhoenix.com all started- that was back in January 2008. Originally it was launched as Gelie.net and in October of 2008, we rebranded and re-launched the website.

Q:  Did you go full steam into this project?

A:  Yes and no. I was definitely on my journey of becoming an entrepreneur, but right when I launched, I started contracting for several companies (that was the business model for gelie.net) and worked with them for months all the while the calendar just ‘lived’ on gelie.net. I

Q:  How did you get the word out about NetworkingPhoenix.com when you did the re-launch?

A: I networked like crazy and began using social media and asking my contacts to spread the word about the calendar.  I asked everyone that I had already built relationships with to promote the calendar and the website through email, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and anything else that made sense at the time!

The social media promotions really took off and people started spreading the word through the various tools as well as direct email campaigns. This multiplied the free profile sign-ups on NetworkingPhoenix.com by massive amounts.  The site went from 400 members in Oct. ’08 to nearly 6,100 to date.  As a local site, that’s not a publication, NetworkingPhoenix.com is the most visited site in Arizona. And nearly half of the visitors are returning.

Q:  Did you do other things to get website and brand noticed?

A:  Yes, I developed NetworkingPhoenix.com quarterly Signature Events.  The first one was held in January of 2009. I reserved the space for 150 people and approximately 600 showed up. And this event was held on the same night as the Phoenix Open – so I thought no one would show up!  In March we held our second event, where 750 networkers showed up, and in August we had over 1,000 in attendance!

Q:  What goes on at the events?

A:  The event itself is a big Mix & Mingle. It’s really all about networking, creating new connections and giving people a chance to get together in a friendly professional environment.  The testimonials that come out from this event are pretty incredible. People are always telling me about the great business connections that they made and some of these are pretty high dollar deals!

Q:  Who is the event for?

A:  It’s for the entrepreneur, small business owner, sales professional, person in a career transition and anyone else in between that wants to network!

Q:  Do you plan on having more events?

A:  Our last one of the year is being held on Thursday, November 19th, 2009, 5:00pm – 9:00pm at the Scottsdale Hilton.

Q:  Why do you think this event has become so successful?

A:  Probably a few different reasons. I know people like free events and they like being around like-minded individuals. You put those two things together and the ‘buzz’ around the event will spread by word of mouth. It seems the word spreads fast and people seem to create the buzz themselves.  They say things like “Are you going to the Networking Phoenix event?”  “Have you heard about Networking Phoenix and their networking events?”  It spreads like wildfire and I am thankful for the support and plugs.

Q:  Have you had any stories that show the whole social media platform in action?

A:  I did a “Vote for the new Gelie headshot” campaign using social media and there was a great response.  Lucky for me, everyone chose the headshot I liked best.  But what was really amazing was that people who didn’t even vote would come up and say “Hey Gelie, I like the new headshot you chose”!  It blew me away.

The other story comes from just sitting having lunch at Paradise Bakery and overhearing someone talking about me.  I didn’t know who they were!  I asked, “Are you talking about Gelie and Networking Phoenix?”  They said, “Yes” and I said “That’s me!”  It was wild.

Q:  There’s talk that there are different skills to using social media for business. Do you agree?

A:  Oh definitely.  You always need to be thinking about your brand and how it is portrayed.  You also want people to engage in the conversation.

Q:  So what are you working on now that is part of your social media campaigns?

A:  In just a bit I will be launching “Networking Phoenix TV” where sponsoring businesses will be interviewed by me about their company.  It’s a 3 minute ‘newslike’ segment that will be featured in our emails as well as live on our website and be promoted through our social media channels. The business owner gets to keep the video as well for their marketing campaigns.

Q:  Anything else?

A:  There is always something!  We are also working on providing members with “Member Deals” to give members discounts and sources of great businesses in the Valley.

How to Secure Your Door Against a Home Invader or Burglar—Important Advice from Jordan Frankel, Founder and CEO of Global Security Experts

Home Security Door Brace Can Stop Home Invaders in Their Tracks

Few things are as frightening and potentially deadly as a home invasion or burglary. Though the FBI and local law enforcement do not track this daily threat to lives and property, news headlines tell the real story—home invasions are now, sadly, part of our existence.  Because home invaders have no regard for human life, injuring or murdering a family is simply a means to an evil end—stealing valuables and cash.

Most homeowners like to think that home invasions and burglaries happen to other families.  But as the Founder and CEO of Global Security Experts, Inc., I am here to tell you that criminals don’t discriminate.  Black, white, poor or rich, your family could be the next target of a home invader or burglar.

Take a look at some of today’s disturbing statistics as they relate to home invasions and burglaries:

A burglary occurs every 15 seconds in the United States
1 in 5 homes experiences a break-in or violent home invasion
Approximately 80% of break-ins occur forcibly through a “locked” door.

You can’t eliminate the possibility of a home invasion.  However, you can reduce the likelihood of becoming a target by following my simple suggestions.  Remember:  what’s most important is introducing layers of protection to your home, hence making it difficult for the intruder to enter your dwelling.

As you can see from the frightening statistics, burglaries and violent home invasions are clearly on the rise in America.  With that said, most families make the dreaded mistake of relying on locked doors or an alarm system as their sole barrier between them and the bad guys.  Don’t make that mistake!  Instead, add layers of security such as high quality deadbolts, security door braces, and glass protection film to make it extremely difficult for an intruder to enter your home.

One of the most affordable and effective home security devices is the patented OnGARD Security Door Brace.  This state-of-the-art door brace is constructed of a space-age polymer, the same material found in US fighter planes and transportation bridges worldwide.  The OnGARD door brace is incredibly strong and resists:

Blows and thrusts from a sledgehammer
Body and shoulder slams
Multiple forceful kicks by a 250-pound man.

A relatively small, unobtrusive, two-piece device installed at the bottom of the door, the security door brace works by combining the strength of the OnGARD, the existing door frame and the actual door, which enables the door to withstand the most violent of blows. While a criminal may repeatedly kick the door, he will typically abandon the attempted break-in knowing that the attention- getting noise will draw unwanted attention by neighbors and passersby.
