Improving your motorcycles fuel economy with synthetic oil

Edit Article |

In these times of high fuel prices, many people that have extended commutes have turn to riding motorcycles as a way to spend less of their hard earned money on gasoline. After all, even large powerful motorcycles usually get more than 35 miles per gallon in city driving and 50 or more miles per gallon on the highway. A huge saving over the gas consumption of that SUV many of you are driving!

But have you ever thought that as fuel efficient as you’re motorcycle might be that there is an easy way to improve it even more with a simple change to using synthetic engine and drive train oils?

Compared to conventional petroleum motor oil, synthetic motorcycle oils, especially those made from high grade PAO (polyalphaolifin) synthetic base oils offer measurable and significant improvements in fuel economy.

Synthetic motorcycle oils have a much higher film strength, a lower co-efficient of drag, and reduced resistance to flow, reducing internal friction and drag enough to cause a measurable increase in fuel economy.

Here is a real world example. A friend of mine who does a daily 90 mile commute on his Harley Davidson 883 Sportster was getting an average of 57 miles per gallon on the highway using a common brand of conventional motorcycle oil. Not a bad number at all!

After changing to high grade synthetic motorcycle oil in the engine, primary and transmission though, his fuel economy jumped 5 miles per gallon; a staggering increase of 8%!

What does an 8% increase mean to your pocket book?  My friend rides his bike about 1500 miles per month. At his old average of 57 MPG he was using a little over 26 gallons of gasoline. Figuring a price of .00 per gallon he was spending about .00 per month on gasoline (Gee that sounds cheap compared to my pickup!) When his average increased to 62 MPG it lowered his cost almost 7 dollars per month or .00 per year. More than the cost of going to the synthetic motorcycle oil!

There are of course other benefits to be enjoyed by changing to synthetic oil. Lower operating temperatures, reduced wear and if you choose a product such as Amsoil’s synthetic motorcycle oil that offers a longer than standard drain interval, an element of convenience.

Amsoil inc. introduced the first full synthetic motor oil to meet American Petroleum Institute service requirements in 1972 and today is considered the leader in synthetic lubrication.

What qualities make the best motor oil?

Today’s engines are smaller, lighter and produce more horsepower per cubic inch than ever before and yet hold less oil volume, stressing the engines oil to the maximum. Horsepower increasing additions such as turbo charging and super charging have become common place. Improving Fuel Economy

If you own a powerful car and you drive enthusiastically, you’re probably not going to be blessed with marvellous fuel economy. However, there are various steps you can make to lower the amount of gas you use on any journey without driving like a miser. This article only majors on the most effective methods of reducing fuel consumption, if you need more tips please do a search on Google – there is a plethora of information out there…

Keep your car well maintained

Following the correct service intervals will keep your car running efficiently. New air filters will allow the free flow of air necessary for efficient fuel combustion, clean fuel filters provide a steady stream of petrol to the cylinders, and shiny new spark plugs will provide the spark needed to set the whole thing off. A thing of beauty! They key here is the efficient burn of the fuel air mix, which will allow more power to be extracted from a set volume of fuel. A new air filter alone could increase fuel consumption up to 10%.

Tyres

Underinflated tyres need more energy to roll. Keeping the pressures at the correct level can increase economy by up to 3.5%. Specialist fuel saving tyres are also available, although these may not perform so well on the track! Properly inflated tyres are also key to providing optimum levels of grip, so it’s worth checking periodically.

Gears

Using higher gears won’t give you lightning acceleration but will save fuel. Keeping your revs low (but not so low that your engine starts to struggle) is a good habit to get into when cruising. If you have a “Sport Mode” on your auto transmission, turn this off, as this will hang onto low gears for longer and may even prevent changing to the highest cog.

Accelerate hard to save fuel?!

A British automotive engineering consultancy claims to have unearthed proof that putting your foot down hard on the accelerator can actually be more fuel efficient than driving more conservatively.

“It sounds totally counter-intuitive — and it is,” admits Cousins. The key to saving fuel, he says, is to accelerate hard until the engine reaches 2000 rpm, move up a gear, then put your foot down until you reach 2000rpm again. It’s all to do with internal friction. “Put simply, with your right foot down on the accelerator, the engine is working at its most efficient,” says Cousins. Above 2000rpm the benefits diminish and you start using more fuel, not less.

Here’s the really interesting thing: in tests carried out in a Citroën C1, one of the most fuel-efficient cars, Cousins’s driving technique proved 8.5% more efficient than the “eco-safe driving” style promoted by the Department for Transport (http://www.dsa.gov.uk — search for eco-safe). The government’s official driving method — taught to all UK learner drivers and now included in the driving test — encourages drivers to save fuel by using the accelerator pedal only lightly.

Source: http://driving.timesonline.co.uk/

Dr Steve Cousins should know what he’s talking about – he was project leader for the Axon Automotive Caterham 2R which achieved 131 miles per gallon in UK Shell Eco-marathon, and is one of the world’s top researchers into fuel economy.

Accelerate gently to save fuel

Although there may be evidence that accelerating hard to 2000rpm could save you fuel, accelerating to the red line in every gear will certainly not. In general, try to keep a constant speed where possible by judging potential reasons to slow down in the road ahead and react to them, avoiding rapid changes in momentum. If you’re slowing down and accelerating the whole time, fuel bills will go through the roof.

Speed

The faster you go, the harder it is to propel your vehicle through the air. This means that a small decrease in cruising speed could provide fuel economy benefits. The UK’s Department of Environment claims that every 5 mph you drive over 65 mph will provide a 7% decrease in fuel economy.

Incidentally if you believe these figures, at 130 mph on the autobahns of Germany, you’ll be using 91% more fuel than at 65mph. At 150, you’ll actually be getting negative miles per gallon, and you’ll arrive at your destination younger than when you started!

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Improving Your Results In The Stock Market

The stock market is a difficult place to consistently make profits unless you have learned and implemented the proper trading strategies, methods, techniques, principles and psychology. There is a steep learning curve which will take years of proper trading education and experience if you want to become an elite trader or investor. The purpose of this article is to provide you with a few important methods used by the world’s best stock market traders, past and current. Each one of these methods you learn and then implement in your stock trading will improve your overall results. The methods in this article will only be concerned with buying a stock or going long, not short selling, which is a whole different ballgame.

The best traders always put as many factors in their favor as possible before taking a position in the stock market. It’s like rafting on a river. Going with the current is much easier than going the opposite direction which would be against the current. Jesse Livermore called this the line of least resistance. It’s also called being in harmony or in tune with the market.

The general market direction is a crucial factor when it comes to success in the stock market. About 75% of all stocks follow what the general market is doing. It’s very important to only make a new stock purchase when the general market is in an uptrend or confirmed rally. Its best if the uptrend is during a bull market phase. You can find the current market direction on my website. I will update immediately when there is a change in the market trend.

Stocks tend to run or move in packs. Every stock is part of a sector and breaking it down more, also part of an industry group. When a sector is strong and doing well, it tends to help most of the stocks in that particular sector. When an industry group is strong or doing well, this also have a positive effect on stocks from that particular industry group. About 50% of a stock’s price gain is directly tied to the sector and industry group a stock is part of. So make sure the stock you are considering is part of a strong sector and industry group. You can e-mail me the name and symbol of the stock you are considering and I will gladly provide you with sector and industry group information concerning your stock. Another excellent source for this information is Investor’s Business Daily.

Next let’s do a little analysis of the individual stock you are considering. Make sure your stock has strong fundamentals. Earnings per share and sales should be up at least 20-25%, and better yet, accelerating each quarter. You want your stock to be trending upward in price before you buy it. Best scenario would be your stock breaking out of a sound pattern with heavy volume. This is something I can cover in a future article. At the very least make sure your stock is trending upward. One way you can do this is make sure your stock’s price is above a simple daily moving average such as the 10 or 20 day average. Learning at least basic technical analysis would be to your great benefit.

An area of great importance is money management. You absolutely must cut all your losses short to be successful long term in the stock market. A basic way of doing this is to never let your stock price drop more than 10% from its buy point. If you bought your stock at 20.00 per share, no matter what, you close out your position if the stock drops to 18.00. I suggest putting in a sell stop right after you buy your stock. This way you will be automatically taken out of your position if the price drops to the predetermined level of your sell stop. If your stock moves up nicely, then you can move your sell stop up to at least the breakeven point. You can also keep moving your sell stop up as your stock keeps doing well. This will help protect some of your profits.

In summary, before making a new stock purchase, make sure the general market is in an uptrend or confirmed rally. Check to see if your stock is in a strong sector and industry group. Look for strong fundamentals such as solid earnings per share and sales. Make sure your stock is in an uptrend. Always use proper money management. I have only touched on a few important factors that will improve your trading if implemented. There is a lot more to learn if you want to become a master trader and join that elite group that consistently makes money in the stock market and amasses a fortune over time. Learning and implementing the information in this article is a solid step in the right direction. Always keep reading and learning from the trading legends. It will be well worth your time in many ways.
