EU needs ‘strong message’ on debt

July 20th, 2011 Comments off

French President Nicolas Sarkozy speaks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel French President Nicolas Sarkozy is meeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel

French Finance Minister Francois Baroin has stressed the need for Europe to send a “strong message” that it will act decisively to contain the Greek debt crisis.

He said Thursday’s summit of European leaders should pave the way for further assistance to the debt-ridden country.

The International Monetary Fund has called on Europe to take strong action.

Mr Baroin’s comments came as European banking shares recovered strongly from sharp falls earlier this week.

In France, Societe Generale and BNP were up about 3%, while in Germany, Deutsche Bank climbed 2.8% and Commerzbank rose more than 2%.

Banking shares fell sharply on Monday on debt fears and concerns about the credibility of last Friday’s Europe-wide bank stress tests.

Debt rollover

All eyes are now on Thursday’s summit, with French President Nicolas Sarkozy travelling to Berlin to discuss the debt crisis with German Chancellor Angela Merkel ahead of the meeting.

“This meeting at the highest decision-making level should allow us to take a further essential step to establish the conditions of a new package for Greece, that will make Greece’s debt more bearable,” Mr Baroin said.

“A strong message should be made tomorrow.”

However, divisions remain among European leaders, and Mrs Merkel has played down the chances of Thursday’s emergency eurozone summit resolving Greece’s debt crisis.

Mrs Merkel wants private investors to contribute to any aid package by agreeing to roll over loans they have made to Greece.

However, the European Central Bank disagrees, arguing that such a rollover would constitute a default in the eyes of the international credit ratings agencies and, as such, would undermine investor confidence and the euro itself.

CEO of TNT Expense Management: Happenstance and Strong Childhood Values Lead to Business Success

Edit Article |

Growing up in a very poor Brooklyn neighbourhood, Michael had a happy childhood “since I knew no better.” His parents were Italian immigrants working in factories and living according to old-world values that kept Michael and his siblings away from the bandwagon of kids who went the wrong way. After graduating from East New York Vocational high school, where he took electrical and computer classes, Michael continued his education at the Technical Career Institute, then got his first job as a technician for ITT Communications.

Meanwhile, Michael’s personal life was about to change his professional plans. After two years of marriage, he and his wife were expecting a son whom he wanted to raise away from New York. It happened that Electronic Mail Corporation of America (EMCA) needed technical assistance moving their offices from Manhattan to Connecticut; Michael moved with them, staying as an engineer and senior engineer manager. He devoted the following twelve years to working for consumer-services company CUC International, where he ran voice and data networks, and continued building his knowledge base. The company entered into a merger after tremendous growth; he asked for a departure package and by that afternoon was already doing consulting work.

Although Michael never meant to make consultation his primary work, this stage of his career ended up being vital for his future. “I never had the intent of starting a company; it sort of just fell in my lap. Now I don’t know if I could go back to working for someone.” His company, TNT Expense Management, began with a team of three people. Due to his reputation among clients, the phone calls kept rolling in, and after a short while he had to recruit additional people to fulfil the demand. Overnight, without any previous expectations, his consulting work became a full-fledged business. Michael remembers the moment when he realized this and the anecdote that marked it: “We had just signed a client with a market capitalization of 0 billion, there were only three of us in the company, and we had a server running on a file cabinet in a basement. That’s when we realized this was going to be a company, and not just a few of us doing consulting.”

Today, TNT Expense Management coordinates the telecommunications of large companies, reducing their costs and assuring that companies pay only for what they should be paying. Among the techniques used are sourcing of contract negotiations, bill auditing, processing of invoices and making optimization recommendations about how to reduce costs. TNT’s clients are mostly Fortune 500 and several Fortune 50 companies, and Michael proudly relates that his business has almost 100% client retention. What is his secret? “Reputation, reputation, reputation.” What brought prestigious names to TNT’s roster was performance at an in-depth level and finding the maximum savings for its clients. Although the company has only about 85 employees, it does business on the level of billion-dollar corporations. As Michael puts it, “Big companies expect you to be structured, formal and at their level in your work and communication with them.” Having a quality staff has proven to be crucial. Even though TNT has a significantly smaller staff than what one would expect from a company that generates -12 million in revenue, the selection of employees was anything but random. When asked what brought his company to success, Michael replies: “Having the right people. Make sure you spot the right people and make them happy.” When it comes to efficient and professional employees, it’s a matter of knowing what they are doing, and in a conscientious way. With such an approach, no wonder TNT has grown to become an “ethical, customer-focused company.”

Still, the cherry on top of the large-corporation-client cake is not always sweet. Clients have high demands and the job can become stressful. In those moments, it’s important to stay on track. “Don’t make decisions in a panic mode.” On the other hand, sometimes the issue is not in the task’s difficulty so much as in the client’s temperament. Michael happens to have a remedy for that situation as well. “Growing up where I did exposed me to a lot of different personalities, income levels and backgrounds. That was very helpful to me later on in life because in business you deal with a lot of different types of people. If you can see past someone who is being obnoxious, see where that person’s coming from and why they’re coming off that way, you will be able to respond in a way that makes that person calm down.”

Ultimate career choices are not necessarily those made in one’s twenties, nor do they always require the skills possessed at that point in life. A good CEO and businessman must have well-developed people-smarts to recruit key employees and effectively communicate with clients. And of course, every now and then, not take things too seriously.

Not advice one would give to a heart surgeon, but often the best tonic in business.

Understanding Security Protocols For A Secure Console Server

When a group of people needs to communicate securely over a computer network, they use a secure console server. In simple terms, this is a point of access that keeps all of the network running smoothly and anyone who is not authorized out of the network. The level of security would vary by the type of information transferred. Most companies try to keep their communications and files safe from viruses and hackers by using a secure network, and they hire a professional to administer the server.

Strong Us Dollar = Bad For The Economy?

Edit Article |

Posted: Feb 16, 2010 |Comments: 0
|

Since late January, the US stock market has been in a decline. While the longer term, positive trend of the market remains intact, we are fast approaching a “line in the sand” moment for market watchers.

The market had been in a strong uptrend since March of last year, but has recently broken that trend. This may simply be due to profit taking as investors look to reallocate their portfolios, or this may be something more severe. While the S&P 500 index is in a very textbook and orderly decline, market watchers will be looking at the 200 day moving average to get a longer term perspective of the market’s general direction. Bullish investors like to see a market trade above the 200 day moving average. Violating the moving average is a good indicator that the market trend has changed.

As the market declines to meet up with the current 200 day moving average, traders will be closely watching to see if buyers come back to the market. If buyers don’t come back to the market at this level, it is a good indication that the majority of market participants feel that something has fundamentally changed (e.g., greater chance of a double dip recession, higher than expected tax increases, poor corporate earnings, etc.).

This raises the question: What has changed in the US economy? Answer: The comeback of the US dollar. While most politicians like to brag about having a strong dollar policy in place, it really isn’t that great during a weak economy. A strong dollar makes US products more expensive overseas.

Since the market meltdown in 2008, the US dollar has been very weak when compared with its peers, such as the Euro. This has helped stabilize the US economy in two ways. First, our products are cheaper and more competitive overseas. Second, our products are cheaper and more competitive back home. The US economy is largely based on consumers. The more consumers buy US products, the better it is for our economy.

Historically, the US has always been the safest currency in the world. Last year, many countries sold the US dollar and moved their money to the Euro or into Asian currencies. However, the recent news that Greece, a Euro country, may be the next “Iceland” (insolvent) has caused international currency investors to run back to the US dollar – thus causing the US dollar to strengthen.

How is the Rothe Financial Group using our Absolute Return Strategy to take advantage of these market indicators? Right now, the actively managed portion of our portfolio has been moved to cash as we wait to see if the 200 day moving average is violated. If the moving average is violated, we will then begin to add inverse investment positions which provide us a unique opportunity to profit in a declining market. We will continue to follow these trends closely and update our strategy as needed to maximize our clients’ profits regardless of market conditions.

The stock market. To some it’s a puzzle. To others it’s a source of profit and endless fascination. The stock market is the financial nerve center of any country. LJ International (NASDAQ: JADE) 200 Retail Jewelry Stores Strong and Growing in China

Edit Article |

Posted: Oct 22, 2010 |Comments: 0
|

China’s fastest growing jewelry maker LJ International is looking to expand its stores – 60 more of them, in fact. And, according to today’s news that the company secured M in stock offerings and loans from a major institutional investor and bank, they have just about enough to cover the expansion, too.

The stock offering comes from a joint investment from J.P. Morgan Chase and a company called Oasis to purchase new shares of LJ as well as warrants to purchase shares of LJ’s subsidiary ENZO, the retail stores through which the company sells its jewels. J.P. Morgan and Oasis struck the deal up just earlier this month, on October 8th, 2010.

The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China has issued a credit facility worth M with an interest rate of 5% for the working capital needed to expand the ENZO brand. The new stores are expected to be opened throughout 2011.

Once the new stores are opened, LJ will have a total of about 200 ENZO stores in operation throughout China. In what’s arguably becoming the largest economy in the world, LJ is poised to harness substantial growth as the spread between the very wealthy and the growing middle class on China begins to compress. Retail outfits from different industries in China have been reporting growing sales, expansion, and profits in the country this year as GDP rebounds and personal discretionary spending from the Chinese increases.

“The financing package we announce today is a pivotal event in LJI’s execution of its retail-based growth strategy,” said LJ Chairman and CEO Yu Chuan Yih. Like so many other small-cap companies in our indices, the equity and loan combo financing says more about the future of the company than it does about the present. The ICBC institution is one of the largest and most respected banks in China, and the equity investment from J.P. Morgan and Oasis testifies to the continued growth prospects for LJ’s business.

The equity investment from J.P. Morgan and Oasis comes with warrants that if executed, would put the 6M market-cap LJ International at a 0M market-cap valuation. Details of the warrants have not yet been released, but investors are reacting favorably. Shares of LJ are up today $ .32, or about 6.6% to trade at .17 a share a little more than average volume.

LJ International designs, brands, markets, and distributes a full range of jewelry including earrings, necklaces, pendants, rings and bracelets through its ENZO stores. The company is vertically integrated, engaged in mining the jewels and wholesaling to fine jewelers, department stores, national jewelry chains and electronic and specialty retailers throughout North America, Western Europe, and now, China.

Sucking : Life Pulled Out Of The Markets

After a wild, huge volume day on Friday, the markets returned to “normal”. The volatility of Friday has been sucked out, volume dry and the drama ancient history. The Middle East and Northern Africa continues to be caught up in riots and protests but the U.S. markets seem to be shrugging it off as key stocks lead the market higher and the Dollar drops. Currently, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSE:SPY) is trading at 8.25, +0.53 (+0.41%).

Precious Metals and the Dollar’s Next Big Move Part II
