Traditional Ways to Partially Monetize A Hedge Fund Management Company
There are five methods to partially monetize interests in a hedge fund management company:
(1) a traditional IPO
(2) a reverse merger into a public shell (or SPAC)
(3) a listing on AIM, without any capital being raised
(4) selling less than 100% of the equity or
(5) selling a revenue interest.
Examples of traditional IPOs would include Man, Och-Ziff, Gottex, RAB Capital; BlueBay, Polar, and Ashmore (plus Fortress, Blackstone, and Partners Group, if extended to alternative asset managers). These should not be confused with the IPOs of publicly traded closed ended funds.
Examples of reverse mergers would include GLG and Asset Alliance. Examples of an AIM listing without raising capital would include Absolute and Charlemagne. An example of a partial sale would include Highbridge and examples of revenue interests would include AQR, First Quadrant, Avenue, Lansdowne, Winton, and most firms backed by seeding platforms.
With the exception of Man and the Partners Group in Switzerland, each of the IPOs has been a disappointment relative to their initial public offering price. As for Reverse mergers, GLG has not been a success thus far, even after GLG coughed up nearly 0 million in slippage to get the deal done. The Asset Alliance – Tailwind reverse merger which was announced nearly 5 months ago has gone radio silent, which is not a positive sign.
AIM listings without raising capital lack a third party value validation when offered to the public and Absolute has been nothing short of a disaster, while Charlemagne is off more than 50%. Selling less than 100% of the equity or a revenue interest seems to work best, but a minority equity stake often imposes restrictions under which hedge fund managers chafe, while revenue interests do not. Whether a less than 100% equity stake or a revenue interest, each method still begs the question of how to monetize the rest of the ownership.
Selling Out
The only way to fully monetize a hedge fund management business is to sell out. Unfortunately, a total sale usually ends up with the sellers leaving at the first opportunity and the buyer usually has great difficulty in maintaining the value that it purchased. Examples of this include Glenwood, RMF, HBV, and Old Lane. As such, buyers will naturally be(a)ware and pricing will usually be lower than in other industries as a result.
Creating a Reinsurer or Bank and Merging Some or All of the Hedge Fund Manager into it
A new alternative is for the hedge fund manager to sponsor the creation of a reinsurer or bank that allocates all of its investable assets to the sponsoring manager, providing a significant amount of permanent capital for the manager (making the management firm more valuable) and producing significantly higher returns for investors than the manager’s funds without a proportionate increase in risk. Once the reinsurer or bank is fully developed, it can acquire some or all of the hedge fund management firm.
In this manner, the monetization process is able to benefit from many of the better points of other monetization alternatives. For example, it permits a total sale (without the normal problem of loss of control) and creates a public market for the interests of the hedge fund manager, but as a reinsurer or bank, rather than as an asset manager (which probably means higher market multiples). Carefully crafted, the transaction can be structured on a very tax efficient basis, particularly if partnership taxation for publicly traded managers or deferred compensation for offshore funds is lost.
While this alternative is yet unproven, it is more or less how Warren Buffett transitioned from being a hedge fund manager and monetized his asset management business. This summer a billion hedge fund manager is likely to announce a merger with a Swiss private bank as the first step in a similar process.

Just like many people, I’ve always been a little dubious about robot trading. The reason is simple: if it were that easy to make money with these systems, then sure, everyone would be doing it and we would all be rich and you would hear about these huge successes and gains. We all know this is really not possible. Or… is it possible with the Fap turbo robot? I don’t think so.
The problem with every automated Forex trading system is being able to trade it, the drawdowns, and their incapability to predict the future. The Fap turbo guys show an unrealistic drawdown amount of less than 1%. If they have to pump it and show unrealistic numbers, what are they hiding? However as I said, the problem with such systems is being able to trade it. You have to be able to master fapturbo settings, test them to see which ones work better than others – you have to do that if you want to make any money with it! There is no such thing as easy money… especially not in Wall Street.
My expertise more than a decade ago was writing and testing Forex trading systems. I’ve developed dozens of them and tested many more. Back then, the big thing was neuro net trading, where computers learned as it traded and grew better with time. These systems were only tested because they were profitable in back-testing older data. I’ve never seen one that was consistently profitable in real time, and no Forex trading robot should make such claims.
Recently, I’ve had indirect contact with robot trading, talking to other traders in chat rooms and listening on blogs. Once again, I’ve never heard of one that actually works consistently in real time. However I had a very interesting discussing with this experienced Fap turbo user who told me he only started making good money with the Fap turbo robot when he bought this guide called The Fap Turbo Expert Guide.

Two Questions That Were Worth Billions To A CEO

Peter Drucker, the father of modern management and the world’s foremost management consultant once asked Jack Welch, CEO of GE, two questions that proofed to be worth billions of Dollars during Jack Welch’s tenure as CEO. The first question was “If GE weren’t already in a business, would you enter it today?” The he followed up with, “If the answer is no, what are you going to do about it?” Welch decided that if GE could not be number one or number two in a market, the business would have to be fixed, sold or closed.
I suggest that every business owner ask himself or herself the same questions. Now you might ask “What’s wrong with being number 3 or number 11 in the market?” which is a great question. After all, if there would only ever be two competitors in any market, the business world would be a pretty empty place. If you are number 20 out the 500 leading manufacturers in your field, chances are that you are still doing very very well.
But let’s face it, in the UK there are 2.15 million businesses in 2010, but 98 % out of them have less than 50 employees and just 0.4 % count for larger enterprises with over 250 staff, and 47% of all UK businesses are under 4 years old[i], so chances are that you, dear reader, are not leading one of those large corporations where being number 20 still means to run a world-class business, but that you are the owner of a start-up or small or medium sized enterprise, where being number 20 means struggling to justify and keep your place in the market.
If you are number 20 or so, it means that your clients have difficulties to perceive you as different or outstanding, and that’s exactly why we always remember the number one or two, but not anyone further down the ranks. Who is the number one online bookstore? Amazon. Who is number 5? Who is the number one department store? Harrods. Number 2? John Lewis. Number 3? Get’s difficult.
If you can’t win, and by winning I mean be number 1,2 or three, there are only two reasons for it in the world: The first reason is that other competitors are outperforming you, and reason number two is that you are in a market where you should not be in the first place, because you can’t win.
Now what’s the point of persisting to play when you can’t become top? No athlete competes to always be number 5, they compete to win.
Well, you might say, that’s all fine and dandy, but I need to make a living and making a living as number 20 in the market place is still better than making no living by giving up.
But that’s not the point. The point is that you should either fix it, and means to become better. In the UK today, you still can butcher the competition in any given industry by just offering a customer service that blows away clients. If you can’t fix it, sell it or close it down and enter a market place where you can win, but don’t burn your resources in a place you can’t be first.
